The California Wastewater Certification program is administered by the State Water Resources Control (SWRCB) and is made to ensure operators of wastewater treatment facilities are properly trained and meet qualifications.
The program certifies wastewater treatment plant operators at five different levels, Grade I to Grade V. Grade levels are based on education, experience and completion of a California state exam. Each certified grade corresponds to a wastewater complexity and the size of the facility that an operator can manage. Certification is required by the state for anyone operating or supervising a wastewater treatment plant, this is to protect public health and the environment.
To become certified, an applicant must meet eligibility requirements for both educational background and on-the-job experience in wastewater treatment. When certified, the operator must renew their license every three years by completing continuing education and submitting a renewal application. The wastewater certification program is essential to maintain high standards of operation in California’s wastewater infrastructure.
