Manufacturing Engineer

San Luis Obispo, California

About

Nviro delivers integrated water and wastewater treatment solutions that support a sustainable future. We simplify complex systems through a full-service approach: design, construction, operations, maintenance, compliance, and technology. Our in-house manufacturing capabilities allow us to engineer high-performance equipment tailored to the needs of both industrial facilities and municipalities. At every step, our mission is to leave systems better for our clients, our communities, and the environment.

Opportunity

Nviro is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support the design, drafting, and manufacturing of modular water and wastewater treatment systems. This role is responsible for transforming process and mechanical requirements into practical, buildable system designs that are cost-effective, reliable, and easy to manufacture. The Manufacturing Engineer works cross-functionally with project managers, process engineers, fabricators, and electricians to ensure smooth transitions from concept to shop floor to field installation.

Responsibilities

System Design & Drafting

  • Develop detailed mechanical and piping designs for packaged water/wastewater treatment systems (i.e.  MBRs, lift stations, skids), including 2D and 3D CAD drawings, general arrangements, skid layouts, piping plans, and fabrication drawings.
  • Maintain and manage drawing revisions, BOMs, and documentation through ERP and drawing control systems.
  • Incorporate redlines from fabrication and field teams into drawing updates.

Product Engineering

  • Standardize designs for repeatable system builds and modularity.
  • Support component selection and specification (pumps, valves, instruments, enclosures, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with applicable design standards, codes, and project specifications.

Manufacturing & Integration Support

  • Work closely with the shop team to support fabrication, troubleshoot issues, and refine designs for manufacturability.
  • Provide technical support to control panel and electrical integration teams (knowledge of UL 508A/698A a plus).
  • Participate in design reviews, QA/QC checks, and post-project evaluations to improve product performance and production efficiency.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Coordinate with the engineering team to ensure system functionality and compliance with treatment goals.
  • Interface with procurement for material sourcing, lead times, and cost reviews.
  • Provide drafting and design support to estimating or business development teams as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Civil, or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent work experience).
  • 3-5+ years of experience in equipment design, drafting, or manufacturing engineering (preferably with water/wastewater systems, process equipment, or skidded systems).
  • Strong software expertise in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD platforms.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of fluid systems, pumps, valves, tanks, instrumentation, and structural framing.
  • Experience with ASME, AWS, or piping/fabrication codes preferred.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Hands-on mindset and willingness to work in the shop to support production.

Preferred Traits

  • Knowledge of water treatment processes: filtration, chemical dosing, MBRs, SBRs, etc.
  • Familiarity with UL panel design, PLC layouts, or controls integration.
  • Experience with modular construction or prefabricated process skids.
  • Continuous improvement mentality and ability to contribute to standardization and design-for-manufacture efforts.

Work Environment

  • Office and fabrication shop setting with occasional field site visits.
  • Some lifting, bending, and physical activity may be required when supporting shop or commissioning teams.
  • Travel may be required for vendor coordination or project startup (<10%).

To thrive in this environment, you must…

  • be a tenacious problem solver,
  • communicate clearly and professionally,
  • work well independently, and with a team,
  • exercise sound judgment,
  • be curious and eager to expand your technical knowledge,
  • care to deliver a positive client experience,
  • show humility by being receptive to feedback,
  • and be driven to have an impact.
