The program certifies wastewater treatment plant operators at five different levels, Grade I to Grade V. Grade levels are based on education, experience and completion of a California state exam. Each certified grade corresponds to a wastewater complexity and the size of the facility that an operator can manage. Certification is required by the state for anyone operating or supervising a wastewater treatment plant; this is to protect public health and the environment.
To become certified, an applicant must meet eligibility requirements for both educational background and on-the-job experience in wastewater treatment. When certified, the operator must renew their license every three years by completing continuing education and submitting a renewal application. The wastewater certification program is essential to maintain high standards of operation in California’s wastewater infrastructure.
